The International Day of Charity, observed each year on 5 September, recognises the role that charitable and volunteering activity plays in supporting people and strengthening communities.
For Samsic and JPC by Samsic, social value is created through practical action: colleagues volunteering their time, teams sharing their professional skills and partnerships that help people access support, experience and employment.
Across the UK, our colleagues work alongside clients, suppliers and community organisations to respond to local needs. These activities vary from site to site, but they share a common purpose: using our resources and expertise to make a positive contribution.
Creating pathways into employment
Inclusive employment is an important part of our social value activity.
Through partnerships with organisations including DFN Project SEARCH and Pursuing Independent Paths, we help people with learning disabilities and autistic people access paid work experience and supported pathways into employment.
Participants gain practical experience in working environments, supported by job coaches and members of our onsite teams. Managers can also access training designed to help them understand the different forms of support colleagues may need.
These partnerships are not only about offering short-term experience. Their purpose is to help people develop confidence, demonstrate their abilities and explore meaningful, sustainable employment.
We also work with specialist education providers to offer structured workplace experience, helping young people become familiar with working environments and develop practical skills for the future.
Supporting people experiencing food insecurity
Colleagues across our business regularly volunteer with organisations addressing food insecurity.
Through our work with Food For All, teams have supported food-preparation sessions and helped distribute essential products to people who need them. We have also worked with suppliers to facilitate further product donations, extending the support beyond an individual volunteering session.
Other colleagues have volunteered with The Felix Project, helping to prepare and package rescued surplus food for distribution to community organisations supporting people experiencing food insecurity.
At a community social supermarket, volunteers help provide an environment where people can select the food they need with dignity and choice.
These activities demonstrate what can be achieved when colleagues, clients, suppliers and charities combine their time, resources and expertise.
Sharing our professional skills
Social value does not always require a traditional fundraising event. Sometimes, the most useful contribution we can make is to share the skills our teams use every day.
Samsic and JPC by Samsic colleagues have provided cleaning support to community centres, charities and organisations supporting vulnerable people. This helps create clean, safe and welcoming environments where essential community services can continue to be delivered.
Our teams have supported organisations working with older people, women and girls, people experiencing homelessness and young people facing barriers to opportunity.
Elsewhere, colleagues have helped older residents develop confidence using technology, while refurbished IT equipment has been donated to schools and community organisations where it can continue to provide value.
By reusing functional equipment before considering recycling, these donations can also help extend product life and prevent avoidable electronic waste.
Fundraising for health and wellbeing
Our colleagues also organise and participate in fundraising activities supporting health-related charities.
Teams have completed sponsored walks and participated in sporting events to raise funds for organisations supporting children receiving intensive care, people affected by cancer and other important causes.
These activities are often inspired by issues that have directly affected colleagues and their families. They bring people together around a shared purpose while raising funds and awareness.
Alongside fundraising, our teams support initiatives promoting dignity and inclusion. This includes working with clients to improve access to appropriate sanitary-waste facilities in men’s washrooms, helping people experiencing incontinence dispose of products safely and discreetly.
Volunteering for cleaner communities
Environmental volunteering is another way our colleagues contribute to the communities surrounding the places where we work.
On Earth Day 2026, Samsic colleagues joined clients, partners and colleagues from France for a River Cleanup initiative, collecting more than 225kg of waste from the River Thames.
Teams also participate in local litter picks, help care for canals and public spaces, and work alongside environmental organisations to protect areas used by local communities.
Although these activities differ from charitable fundraising, they form part of our wider approach to social value by helping create cleaner and more welcoming shared environments.
Making every contribution count
The strongest community initiatives are built on collaboration.
Our colleagues understand the communities surrounding their workplaces and can often see where their time or professional skills could make a meaningful difference. Clients, suppliers and charity partners provide the local knowledge, resources and specialist expertise needed to turn that willingness into effective action.
Samsic’s Charity Steering Group helps connect these contributions, share good practice and coordinate support for charities, schools and community organisations across the UK.
